To narrow your search, you'll need to "zoom in" on your topic. Just as placing an object under a microscope reveals detail that's not visible to the naked eye...narrowing your topic will help you identify more specific concepts and keywords. Your search results will be more focused.
- Just as you did when you chose your keywords, identify each of the major concepts in your topic. For each concept, make a list of specific examples or types.
- It may help to first consult a
thesaurus, or do a test search to find synonyms (other ways to describe your concepts) and examples.If you can't find a more specific example of one of your concepts...don't worry. Just get as narrow as you can.
Let's try an example.
Suppose our topic is: How does class interaction help online students succeed?
We tried searching for interaction AND online students AND success, but most of the articles we found only mentioned interaction briefly, and some weren't really relevant all. We need more detail to write a paper about this topic. So, we'll add more detail to our search!
First, we identify the major concepts and zoom in on each one to find the specifics. Like this:
Original concepts:
interaction online students successNarrower concepts:

Even narrower concepts:

Now, we'll try searching again...this time mixing and matching our narrower (and even narrower) terms with our original terms, until we get the kinds of results we need:

Note:
Narrowing your search can mean
narrowing your research topic, too...you might decide, based on your new search results, to follow a slightly more focused path with your paper or presentation. Sometimes a narrower topic is more interesting to read (and to write!) about, because a more detailed investigation brings deeper insight and new perspectives. Be sure to clear topic changes with your instructor.
But, even when your topic is broad, there are times when searching narrowly is useful.
Articles, in particular, are usually written about narrower topics than books. If your article searches bring too many irrelevant results, try narrowing your keywords. Even if an article addresses a more specific aspect of your topic, you'll probably be able to use information or examples that you find there.

The words that you type into a search box are the key to finding the most relevant articles and books. That's why they're called keywords!
You'll need to choose keywords carefully. See the steps below (or if you prefer, here is a short video).
First, identify themajor concepts from your topic.
1. Write out a brief description (1 or 2 sentences) of your research topic. It can be very helpful to phrase it in the form of a question that
you'd like to answer. (See the research question example below.)
2. Identify the most important 2 - 4 wordsfrom your research question. These are your key concepts.
Tip:
- To decide which words are most important, imagine that you need to explain your topic to someone using no more than 4 words. Words like "does," "the," "in," or "of" (while useful in a sentence) won't be specific
enough, so you wouldn't use those.
3. For each key concept, make a list of other words with the same or related meanings. These will be your keywords!
Tips:
- Use a thesaurus to find synonyms. Think of specific examples
or types. If your topic is something you don't know enough about yet, it can be hard to think of synonyms or examples. Find some background information on your topic to help jump-start your brainstorming!

Next, test and refine your keywords.
1. Go to the library's homepage and find the Everything search box.
2. Choose one keyword from each concept list. Type those keywords into the search box. Type AND between each one (learn about Boolean operators: AND, OR, NOT).

3. Click search and explore the results. Try several of your keyword combinations, and keep a list of the keywords that fetch the most relevant articles.

4. Look closely the most relevant articles in your search results. You may see new author-supplied keywords or database subject headings that describe your topic. Add those terms to your list.
5. Create new keyword combinations from your refined list of terms, and test them again!
