Emergent or Urgent

“Emergent problems can be subjective, but there are some good guidelines we can go by in making a determination of emergency,” explains Lazarus. “The most basic guidelines for what make a situation emergent is if your life, limb or vision is stake. If any of these things are in danger, we would call that an emergency. Other conditions outside of life, limb, or vision also warrant immediate intervention (as described below) because of the likelihood of the condition getting worse and possible organ failure. We also know there are patient populations that are higher risk of death — this includes children under 2 years of age, geriatric patients, and those with a weakened immune response.”

Reasons to Go to the Emergency Department

Read on for a sample of some of the reasons you should seek emergency treatment right away. If you have an emergency, never attempt to drive yourself to the hospital, as you’ll not only put your own life in danger, but also the lives of those around you. If you have an emergency, call 911 immediately and wait for the ambulance.

Advancements in Emergency Care

“There have been huge advancements made to emergency care in just the last few years and over the last 15 years, as well,” says Lazarus. “New technologies and newer equipment like the rapid fluid infuser, bedside ultrasound and intra-osseous infusion have enabled us to improve the timeliness of care and administration of medication to emergent patients.”

These new technologies allow the medical staff to deliver care that used to require much longer treatment times and more transportation around the emergency department, where they can now come right to your bed.

“Our emergency departments are equipped with advanced testing equipment, labs and access to a wide variety of life-saving medications. And all our nurses have been trained and certified in emergent cardiac, pediatric and trauma care to provide you with the highest level of fast-paced advancement of care for your entire well-being.”

Call 911 immediately if you are experiencing a medical emergency or symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.

Whenever an illness or injury occurs, you need to decide how serious it is and how soon to get medical care. This will help you choose whether it is best to:

Call your health care providerGo to an urgent care clinicGo to an emergency department right away

It pays to think about the right place to go. Treatment in an emergency department can cost 2 to 3 times more than the same care in your provider's office. Think about this and the other issues listed below when deciding.

Signs of an Emergency

How quickly do you need care? If a person or unborn baby could die or be permanently disabled, it is an emergency.

Call 911 or the local emergency number to have the emergency team come to you right away if you cannot wait, such as for:

ChokingStopped breathingHead injury with passing out, fainting, or confusionInjury to neck or spine, particularly if there is loss of feeling or inability to moveElectric shock or lightning strikeSevere burnSevere chest pain or pressureSeizure that lasted 3 to 5 minutes

Go to an emergency department or call 911 or the local emergency number for help for problems such as:

Trouble breathingPassing out, faintingPain in the arm or jawUnusual or bad headache, particularly if it started suddenlySuddenly not able to speak, see, walk, or moveSuddenly weak or drooping on one side of the bodyDizziness or weakness that does not go awayInhaled smoke or poisonous fumesSudden confusionHeavy bleedingPossible broken bone, loss of movement, particularly if the bone is pushing through the skinDeep woundSerious burnCoughing or throwing up bloodSevere pain anywhere on the bodySevere allergic reaction with trouble breathing, swelling, hivesHigh fever with headache and stiff neckHigh fever that does not get better with medicineThrowing up or loose stools that does not stopPoisoning or overdose of drug or alcoholSuicidal thoughtsSeizures

When to go to an Urgent Care Clinic

When you have a problem, do not wait too long to get medical care. If your problem is not life threatening or risking disability, but you are concerned and you cannot see your provider soon enough, go to an urgent care clinic.

The kinds of problems an urgent care clinic can giảm giá with include:

Common illnesses, such as colds, the flu, earaches, sore throats, migraines, low-grade fevers, and limited rashesMinor injuries, such as sprains, back pain, minor cuts and burns, minor broken bones, or minor eye injuries

If you are not Sure, Talk to Someone

If you are not sure what to do, and you don't have one of the serious conditions listed above, call your provider. If the office is not open, your phone call may be forwarded to someone. Describe your symptoms to the provider who answers your call, and find out what you should do.

Your provider or health insurance company may also offer a nurse telephone advice hotline. Call this number and tell the nurse your symptoms for advice on what to do.

Prepare now

Before you have a medical problem, learn what your choices are. Check the website of your health insurance company. Put these telephone numbers in the memory of your phone:
